Just can't seem to get pfSense setup
-
I seem to be unable to wrap my head around pfSense and how to get it configured for my home network.
My ideal setup is to run it as the entry point to my network, as a VM inside Proxmox. However, whilst I'm getting it all configured and setup, I want it to be running inside my current network.
I've got pfSense on a VM in proxmox, with the bridged networks etc, and I can see on my current home router (OpenWRT) that pfSense has a local IP, but neither pfSense nor any of the devices on the LAN side can access the internet.
I can confirm that the Proxmox host is able to ping domains on the internet successfully.
I've reinstalled pfSense countless times to try and check off any problems that I've missed, but I can't for the life of me work out what's wrong.
I don't have any DNS servers in pfSense configured, because I want it to forward DNS requests to the current router. Everything else is set to the default settings after a fresh install.
I have "Block private networks and loopback addresses" and "Block bogon networks" unchecked already.
Any advice on this would be fantastic.
Thanks

And what IP is pfsense getting on its wan, and what IP pfsense setup for on its lan?
So it goes internet - openwrt - what network? --- wan pfsense lan -- what network?

Hey John, thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
Forgive me if you don't get all the information straight away, I'm very new to this.
And what IP is pfsense getting on its wan, and what IP pfsense setup for on its lan?
On the Dashboard;
- the WAN IP is 192.168.1.113 (and I've verified that in OpenWRT)
- the LAN IP is 192.168.1.1
So it goes internet - openwrt - what network? --- wan pfsense lan -- what network?
Hopefully the diagram makes it easier to understand my home network (currently)
Obviously the end result is to replace the OpenWRT router with the Dell Optiplex

You can't use the same subnet on multiple interfaces.

the LAN IP is 192.168.1.1well that without even looking at your drawing isn't going to work.. You need different networks on pfsense wan and lan if you expect it to route between the 2 networks.

Just swapped pfSense over to 192.168.2.1 and that appears to have solved my issues.
Good to know for next time!
