New to pfSense, best value hardware for gigabit ISP connection
-
Hi all - new to the forum
Recently I switched from wireless ISP to gigabit fibre (Telus purefibre) connection at my home.
I have been using the ISP supplied hardware, and relegated my Linksys WRT3200ACM-CA router that I installed DD-WRT on to serve as a switch and wireless AP.
The ISP hardware consists of a Nokia ONT and Telus NH20A router with its own firewall.
My plan was to get a newer router that has wifi 6 and replace the ISP router with it, but while surfing the youtube rabbit-hole one day came across some videos talking about pfSense and am thinking that's the way I'd like to go, as I would like to put my wired & wifi IOT devices on a separate network (which I think I can do with dd-wrt as well) from my PC's & NAS drives.
I was looking at the Netgate 2100, but from what I understand it will not utilize my gigabit connection fully. The 4100 is a bit out of my price range so I was looking at something like this, but I can't tell from the description if it will utilize the gigabit fibre connection.
I'm a database guy not a network guy so my knowledge in all this is somewhat limited.
Is this a good choice hardware wise, or any other suggestions what would be good?
Thanks in advance.

Depends how you define 'best value'.
Adding some NICs to hardware you already have is hard to beat but might not meet other requirements you might have like size or noise level.
You would need a 4100 to see 1Gbps, yes.

@stephenw10 I don't have any hardware lying around I can use, so purchasing a small appliance will be necessary.
