SuperMicro + E6300 wont install from CD

  • I'm trying to install build pfSense-1.2.3-20090921-0655.iso.gz

    Hardware is as follows;

    SUPERMICRO MBD-PDSBM-LN2+-O LGA 775 Intel 946GZ
    Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale 2.8GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E6300
    Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)

    We were able to install everything else from Ubuntu to Windows, hardware tests ok but cannot get pfsense to install. I'd love to get this board up and running. (dual Intel G eths)

    Screen reads:
    p4tcc1: <cpu frequency="" thermal="" control="">on cpu1

    Fatal Trap 12:page fault while in kernel mode
    cpuid=0 apic id=00
    fault virtual address = 0x2432
    faultcode = supervisor write, page not present
    instruction pointer = 0x70 : 0x9f12
    stackpointer = 0x28:0xfd0
    Frame pointer = 0x28 : 0x1f1
    Code segment = base 0xc00e577, limit 0xffff, type 0x1b
    processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume
    current process = 0 (swapper)
    trap # = 12
    panic fault: page fault
    cpuid=0
    uptime = 1s

    Being a noob with this board, I figured a page fault meant RAM but the ram tests good and then other OS's installed ok. The bios is current. Could it be a bios setting ?

    Thanks in advance!</cpu>

  • Try booting with ACPI.  Should be a menu option on bootup.

  • when we have ACPI enabled in bios we can not get past bios post/boot screen

    with ACPI disabled in bios the PC boots fine

    have tried booting pfsense with (opt 2) and with out ACPI (default)

    we get the same error

    please tell me im just doing something stupid  ??? lol

  • I doubt your doing anything stupid.   Since it panics right after the thermal control I was thinking it is ACPI.

    Have you checked the bios version to ensure it's the absolute latest (I know you said it was current).

    Also, might try booting a FreeBSD 8 based pfSense snapshot from snapshots.pfsense.org.  Curious if it can boot further.

  • there is only 1 bios ver for this board and i flashed it anyway still not working i will try a BSD 8
    snap shot

  • Something that might be of interest - Supermicro does state that the board doesn't support the Wolfdale or Yorkfield based processors.  You might want to slap in an older processor and try again.

  • This might not be relevant, but I recall reading about some motherboards that provided different ACPI data if the system wasn't running Windows and that ACPI data caused problems for linux.

  • i have a new (older) CPU on the way thanks …...this is the 3rd CPU im trying to get to work with this board....should of went with a AMD board lol

    Yep, I knew I'd have a hard time getting the correct CPU for this. Tommyboy mentioned issues with CPU compatibility on this board a while back. We tried a xeon E3110 first and couldnt post. So I mailed Supermicro about this E6300 we're trying now before it was purchased.

    "Is the Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor compatible with the PDSBM-LN2+ mainboard ?"

    ECS replied with "Yes". Keep in mind Windows, Ubuntu, and our linux based bootable memory test app load up fine. I did order an older Intel Celeron E1500 2.2GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor which I've seen other people here using successfully, it'll be here tomorrow.

  • I have 1.2.2 working with this board and a E2200. I don't recall my bios settings but I did need to update my bios prior to installation.

    After the bios update PF loaded fine using the default mode (I didn't need to disable ACPI)

  • tried 2.0 snapshot with FreeBSD 8.0 got the same error

  • When we were buying supermicro we were asked about what operating system we would install. They said it matters and prepared HW to work with FreeBSD (not sure what it means though).
    So probably a call to your vendor with this question will clarify things?

    Well..  The ACPI issue might be due to the processor involved.  That it might be able to boot into other operating systems doesn't mean there aren't issues.  It could just mean that those operating systems don't require the ACPI readouts/ settings to be valid or even require them at all.

    Take for example, I have an E4300 Engineering Sample running on a production DQ35JO board.
    The machine boots fine into Windows XP & Vista & Linux but trying to read the thermal diodes is impossible because the board doesn't recognize the CPU microcodes.  Using the same processor on an engineering sample DQ35JO works just fine and would give valid readings.

    In the thread-starters case, the Wolfdale might boot into other operating systems just fine but there evidently are some issues with the ACPI read-outs and it seems that pfSense won't boot without getting the valid readings it wants.  It either expects proper readings or get a reply that it's not a supported feature at all (at least as far as I can tell; my D201GLY2 doesn't support thermal readouts and pfSense is chucking along happily).
