ZFS Locks Firewall on Install
-
I've just receive a HUNSN RJ38 box all shiny and new. I'm trying to get pfSense installed on it to start putting it through its paces (heat, load, throughput, iperf, etc.) but I've found that if I select the file system type as ZFS it starts for a brief moment checking a package and then the system hard locks. If I choose UFS it works fine. Any ideas?

You have a screenshot or logs showing where it stops responding?
In both cases it boots the installer and installs cleanly?
Are you choosing the default options for ZFS?
-
@stephenw10 No screenshot. It isn't a console, it's a standalone so I'm not sure. It's a default setup, yes. Here are the steps I take:
Install pfSense
Auto (ZFS) - Guided Root-on-ZFS
Install - Proceed with Installation
Stripe - Stripe-NoRedundancy
ada0 is the only one selected because there is only one drive
The screen shows base.txz with a Progress of 0% at Verifying Checksums of selected distributionsAt that point there is no further progress. After a few seconds the screen turns black and power usage drops from 10W to 3W. Even holding in the power button doesn't turn it off. I have to pull the power cord to get it functioning.

Hmm, sounds like it's hanging when reading the data from the install media or maybe extracting it. I assume you have tried installing from a different USB drive?
-
@stephenw10 Not yet. It installed fine when I choose UFS. It does show the same base.txz scan but it completes and fully installs. I can try a new image early next week. I'll be out most of today on installs. Is anything logged to see what might be happening?
-
There is an error log in /var/log if you can escape the installer to the CLI.

@stephenw10 Thanks. When I get to trying the to switch back to ZFS next week I'll look at it and update this thread.

@stephenw10 I tried it again to try to pull the logs. Instead of rebooting it actually stopped and complained about the base.txz not being valid. I re-downloaded and re-imaged and it worked fine.
