      I´m using pfsense v1.2.3 RC2 August 5 release.
      DHCP connection from ISP.

Last night we had an power outage here where I live in Sweden.
The power was gone for 30min.
When it returned and pfsense booted up again it tried to get IP by DHCP for a short while before it stopped.
Just read this thread where the timeouts for DHCP is set to a short time.
      http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,11840.0.html
I think that my box booted faster than the DHCP server or Switches at my ISP so they where not reachable.
So I ended up with the box booted with no IP and no DNS servers.

When I discovered this in the morning I pressed the renew button and got myself an IP but no DNS servers.
Thought my ISP had some problems after the power outage so I placed a ticket at there support and went off to work.

When I got home in the afternoon I tried doing a couple of release/renew but I didn't get any DNS servers.
Then I rebooted the pfsense box and now the DNS servers where inplace.

Doesn't  the renew get the DNS servers at the same time?

I haven't tried the solution in the thread I posted above for the timeout and retry values yet.

I'm having this exact same problem.

To clarify further.  I get an IP address from my ISP, it just doesn't pull a DNS server from DHCP.  I can ping addresses if I use the IP, but pfsense cannot resolve any hostnames.

Any help woudl be greatly appreciated.

That doesn't sound like the original problem here, theirs was fixed by a reboot.

You could just use the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) under System > General, if you aren't pulling them from DHCP.

Perhaps both of you should configure DNS server(s). (In web GUI: System -> General Setup)

King_Rob - In web GUI, System -> General Setup is Allow DNS server list to be overridden by DHCP/PPP on WAN checked?
