      Hello I am new to IT and I looking for some guidance,

      So I'm trying to setup OpenVPN, but the openvpn-client-export package doesn't want to download(stuck on "please wait while the update system initializes"), So I'm assuming it's because our pfsense+ hasn't been upgraded in a long time. I'm now researching the procedures that go into upgrading and what to do if something goes wrong. I'm hearing a lot of things, some people say they just do a fresh install every time PfSense needs an upgrade, and that its mostly likely for something to fail when you haven't upgraded in a minute. And others just press update and they restore from backup if something goes wrong. But for PfSense plus I heard you need to download Pfsense CE then upgrade to Plus then restore from backup. But then I hear that if your Firewall comes straight from negate that it doesn't require you to do that and just ask support for a ISO image.

      I know for one that you definitely need a backup, but what should be my process be if the update goes wrong? is doing a "Fresh Install" necessary when this router came with PfSense?

      Also I do have PuTTY and I know how connect it to our pfsense+.

      From our purchase history, we bought it directly from Netgate: XG-7100 1U Security Gateway with pfSense software.

        From an older version like 21.02 you must go via 23.01. However that is sufficiently old I would recommend backing up the config and reinstalling 23.05.1 clean.

        Yes open a ticket with us to get the recovery image: https://www.netgate.com/tac-support-request

          @stephenw10

          Would the recovery image take me back to the old version?

          Also, how would I fresh install if the firewall came with PFSense? Do I just grab the latest PFsense CE version on the website then upgrade to Plus then restore from config?

            No the recovery image will take you to 23.05.1. You can then restore your config into that and be back up on the current version.
