CPU spike when updating NAT

Whenever we add a NAT entry in pfsense and apply it, there is a CPU spike and we see lag in traffic and disconnects of existing ssh sessions. Is it something usual?
We have close to 1000 NAT entries in our pfsense instance, and this particular instance which we are running as VM has sufficient memory 8GB and 2 CPUs allocated.
