Replacement for SG 3100
-
My 3100 has reached EOL and I’m looking for a replacement. At first I thought about downgrading to a 2100 but the more I look the less I’m sure about that. Maybe an upgrade to a 4100 would be better???
Right now I’m on a cable 500/30 connection at home. 2 full time users, 5 AP’s, about 30 connected devices (most are ESP sensors used by home assistant), 1 LAN, 3 VLAN’s. I don’t use Suri cata or snort. I do use a remote syslog server for the small amount of logging that is being done.
I had expected the 3100 to be a little more future proof and wouldn’t have replaced it for another 5 years or so if I’d had a choice so would really appreciate some advice on my best option for a device that’ll be good for the next 8 to 10 years.

There is another thread that has discussed this: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/183472/3100-will-reach-end-of-life-in-5-days

I also run P2P software if that makes a difference for the recommendations.

@wgstarks The 2100 is a neat little device but is a bit CPU limited. If you thought there was any possibility of upgrading that download speed I would go with the 4100. The P2P I assume is running on your PC not the router?
OTOH the 3100 won't stop working and per that other thread v23.09 will support it, and there's a chance they might release something else in the next 6 months.
FWIW I don't think Netgate planned on not supporting it either, the issue is FreeBSD stopped developing 32 bit ARM code. Typically older models can run newer pfSense versions well after "end of sale" dates.

@MaxK-0
I took a look at that thread but it’s mostly related to wether or not to replace the 3100 rather than what to replace it with. I know Netgate is recommending the 2100 since I got the same email that was mentioned there but I’m a little concerned that the 2100 may also reach EOL in the next 3 or 4 years since it’s an older model. -

I have fiber all around me but it’s unlikely to be available to me since my house is about half a mile from the highway. It cost me a small fortune to get the cable installed. I could upgrade my cable to a 1G plan but I doubt I will.

It’s running on an unRAID server.

That’s great and I hadn’t thought it through all the way. Might wait to see if Netgate releases new hardware (seen a couple of hints) or maybe has a Black Friday special.

Yeah, I get that this wasn’t really on Netgate.
Thanks for the advice.
