SG1100 Update USB Console Failed
-
So I was trying to update to 23.09. It never finished to my knowledge. Power cycled and now no IP Webgui access. I have the USB console working but it comes up with login name/password and which it accepts, but then just a prompt. How do I get the console menu up? I figure once I can get that back up then I'll do a factory reset and then a restore of my configuration. Any help would be appreciated.

You can try running
/etc/rc.initial
to bring up the menu, but a factory reset is unlikely to help anything. The factory reset only resets the configuration, it wouldn't have any effect on how the system is operating at that level.
You would have better luck forcing it to reinstall everything in place from the console shell using
pkg update -f
followed bypkg upgrade -fy
.You could also contact TAC and ask for an installation image and then reinstall + recover the config and get back up and running that way as well.

@jimp how would I get to the prompt to force a reinstall? Once mine so loading is asking for a password. Never had to do this before after an upgrade or restart.

@gore_bullish814 If the option wasn’t set to prompt there, then something’s wrong. If you spend much time on it reinstalling is likely faster:
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/reinstall-pfsense.html(Speaking in general) Updates take 10-15 min or more on eMMC/slow storage. Don’t boot early.

@SteveITS not a subscription user, any help still
-
@gore_bullish814 if it’s an 1100 it’s a free ticket for Netgate hardware.
-
@SteveITS after following the reinstall setup and getting the image from tac.... I restarted the device and now getting many errors zio_ read error: 5. What does this mean? Is it I selected Zfs and should have selected Ufs?
-
You should be able to install as either ZFS or UFS to the 1100.
What errors are you seeing exactly?

As an aside, I hope future Netgate products always include a hardware factory reset button in their design. The absence of such a button on the 1100 lacks customer focus and makes contending with failed upgrades and malfunctions such as this much more difficult than it has to be.

I did the TAC thing. New image and I am back in operation. My fault probably for not waiting for the update to complete. Thanks to all for your thoughts.

We don't always have complete and total control over every aspect of the hardware as we develop new platforms, but we do try to have a config reset button if at all possible since we know it makes things easier for users (and TAC). Plus we are always trying to make the process easier for users. Just wait until you see the reset process on the next device, it's the best one yet. :-)
