Snort Update Procedure

Hope you are doing well. Have you retired fully from the Power Company yet?Just wanted to touch bases with you on doing updates. It's been a LONG time since we talked about this but years ago (10?) you suggested doing Snort updates by making sure settings would be save after a deinstall , removing the running package then installing the new/updated package. Is this still the best/recommended practice?

@Ramosel Snort should have a similar checkbox to this:
It is checked by default, so settings are saved.
You can just upgrade a package from pfSense's GUI without uninstalling. However a couple of notes:
- make sure you are installing for the correct version (see my sig)
- in general I'd advise making sure pfSense is up to date. Upgrading pfSense will uninstall/reinstall packages.
- the pfSense upgrade guide recommends uninstalling packages before a pfSense upgrade...for instance 2.6 to 2.7 changes from FreeBSD 12 to 14 and PHP 7 to 8 so it is a massive step.

Yes, this is still the safest method. And since the default is to save settings, it means you won't lose any previous configuration.
And "yes", I retired back in February of 2014. I worked as a contractor in a "work from home" job starting in 2015 for about 2 years, but then retired for good at the end of 2017. Just enjoying life now as an official "Old Fart"
. But I have not gotten to the "you kids get off my lawn" stage yet. -

I do reserve my right to complain about "the crap these days", even if I'm not all the way to "you kids get off my lawn". Oh, and both my wife and I like to complain about how much stuff costs now compared to "the good old days".
