Unable to check for updates

That's all I can get on the UI at "System/Update/System Update". This is a plain 2100 that has had one upgrade since I bought it about 2 years ago so it's out of date. One trouble ticket answer was "we know about the failure to update but maybe we will fix that and maybe we won't" - or some equivalent. Back then it attempted to update but rolled back and would never complete. There is no ZFS there is no lack of space. Dashboard view shows Mount=/, Used=1.6G, Size=7.0, Usage=25% of 7.0G (ufs). If I have to go to the command line I am more likely to buy an i3 based NUC and install pfSense (i.e. no +) and do things that way. There is no need to virtualize, this connects directly to the ethernet coming from a fiber connection. I will also have to look into pfSense alternatives, but that might mean contacting some IA/cyber experts I haven't worked with in years but did a while back. I am a software engineer and not a network or Linux/system specialist. I had hoped to treat the 2100 as a simple appliance with the smarts to make having a good firewall a no drama situation. It isn't that simple at this point. Any reasonable suggestions are welcome. I'd rather not do a reset button approach but can consider it. Consider my Linux experience to be at, perhaps, a low end power user level - we do most of our software work, deployment in particular, on Linux but it's not my home system experience (I don't prefer it). The NUC is practical because that's where the fiber comes into a utility / storage room, I have a low end APC UPS to keep it going, some shelves to put it on, but it isn't near any desktop nor other space to use PFSense in a virtualized way. There isn't room to easily put a monitor and keyboard there, and while it's got AC (close to bonus room/guest BR) it's 2100 or NUC. I do want to update to the current software and it's clear the fix is not going to be happening from Netgate. I'm disappointed with it as a network appliance.

There is a reinstall process https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/netgate-2100/reinstall-pfsense.html. It sounds more complicated than it is. It’s a free ticket to get the installation image.

Yes, I would also recommend backing up the config and reinstalling as ZFS. It's the simplest way to get to 23.09 that guarantees the system will be in a clean state. And you will then be on ZFS.
It can probably be recovered but there would be at least some diagnostic commands needed to see exactly why it's failing.
