Providing a configuration seed file for the "factory default" reset?
-
Hello,
I would like to do a "factory default" reset on a Netgate 6100 but keep the interface definitions (WAN/LAN/VLAN settings). If the router IP address changes to 192.168.1.1, I lose access to it, and physically have to go there and plug in a computer.
Is it possible to provide a configuration seed file for the factory default reset process?

Is it possible to provide a configuration seed file for the factory default reset process?I suspect that is done by
- In a lab reset to factory default.
- Set up your WAN/LAN/VLAN
- Save that configuration
- load that configuration into your remote 6100

@tfuto Some thoughts...

https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/restore-during-install.html#restore-using-the-external-configuration-locator-ecl
(someone plugs in USB with preconfigured file during router restart) -
reset something else to defaults, save that config file, and restore parts of it to the 6100 as desired.

@Patch Thank you, I will try this.

@SteveITS: Thank you! Very useful link! Unfortunately for this particular case there is no one to plug in an USB drive, but this is good knowledge.
I will try your second idea.

@tfuto note your lab device will need to use the same nic configuration as your field device to prevent a console nic reassignment on loading the configuration. Ideally a second 6100
-
@Patch I will do that (local 6100 with same NIC configuration), thank you.
-
@tfuto You could also copy/paste parts of the config file into another config file.
-
@SteveITS I was going to suggest something similar but as I have not tried to reverse engineer the configuration file I was unsure how hard that is.
To do it I would compare a reset to default configuration file with the existing configuration file.
