Not getting WAN address via DHCP with modem mode, Virgin media Hub 5x (UK)
-
Hopefully someone can help as I have been pulling my hair out all day with this one.
I have just got fibre to premise connection with ISP Virgin Media UK. The hub they have provided is a 5x, I have placed this into modem mode(bridge mode) and set my Pfsense mini pc (AliExpress special) WAN to DHCP.
Issue is it never pick up an IP, tried all sorts of boot orders and never gets an address from the ISP router in modem mode.
If I have the ISP router in DMZ mode PFsense gets an IP straight away but modem mode nothing. If I set the ISP router in modem mode and connect to a PC I also get my wan ip, so struggling to locate the point of failure on this one. I have also tried spoofing various MACs…. Anyone had similar experience?
Thanks

Try just connecting a laptop (or similar) to the %x router in bridge mode. Does that get a public IP?
You may need to power cycle the router/modem if something else has successfully pulled an IP before pfSense was connected.

VirgnMedia terminology is often different from other ISP's around the world & can be confusing. Default mode = NAT router. "Modem Mode" = Bridged. DMZ is only available in router mode, hence why it works.
In Bridge mode, you can only have one device connected (and the hub disables its WiFi). Earlier VM Docsis CM's (Hubs 3 & 4) always used port-1, but some users say the 2.5Gig port can be used. although this is unconfirmed. First device will grab the bridge IP, so make sure there's only PfSense connected.
Everything else in your network needs to be on the PfSense LAN side.
BTW, count yourself lucky. VF-Ziggo users with same hardware don't have bridge mode available !!
