Is there any hardware, on which I can install and run pfSense, which would have the ability to act as a Wi-Fi access point at the same time as being an internet gateway/firewall/router? Would it suffice to use a Wi-Fi interface as a pfSense interface?

Whilst it's possible to use a wifi NIC in pfSense directly as an access point a real external access point is better in almost every way.

Wifi hardware support in FreeBSD, and hence pfSense, is very limited. Additionally there is no support for 802.11ac/ax.

If you want to try it the best supported cards are older Atheros NICs that support 3x3 802.11n. You will never see more than 300Mbps through it though.

@stephenw10: All that makes sense. I had hoped to find something less expensive that this:

          Netgate 1100 for $209
          EnGenius EWS356-FIT AP for $70
iCreatin PSE-480050US PoE injector for $10.

I will propose that to my client.
