Hi I have a netgate applicance I purchased with pfsense+ and when I go to upgrade from 23.09 to 23.09.1 It fails because /var/cache/pkg needs 159MB however the File system is only sized at 157MB.

Is there a way to resize that or get past that. My appliance is fairly new past past the support period.

I already did the package clean command and it appears only 104k is in use in that file system.

Any tips appreciated, thank you in advance

If it's quite new it may have been installed as ZFS by default. If it's an 1100 and has relatively small storage check System > Boot Environments. The available space may be filled with old snapshots. If so remove some and retry.

@stephenw10 you nailed it, I'm abit of a newbie.
Yes it was zfs and a 2100 device.

I went into system/boot environments as you mentioned and there were about 10 or so there,
I removed the oldest ones and boom! I had 4.6GB free all of a sudden.

Thanks for the quick response!! much appreciated. I'll have to read these forums and
learn as I go, thus far I've picked up much knowledge.

Thank you everyone in the forums here and their patience for newbie people.
I did search the forums alot to make sure this wasn't answered somewhere - I was
mostly looking for disk space type topics.

          Thanks again

@markwis it’s at https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/zfsbe/space.html not under troubleshooting. It’s a relatively new problem for most people because the BEs create at upgrades. The most obvious sign is the dashboard widget shows a smaller than expected disk size. (Capacity not space used…which is not necessary obvious)

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Yes I've hit that myself a few times and it can be confusing! There is work on-going to improve how that is handled.
