S.M.A.R.T. overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED! but no errors when testing

Hi,

I have pfSense installed on 2 Supermicro SATA DOM SSDs (SSD-DM032-SMCMVN1) set up as a zfs mirror.

Last time when I restarted pfSense, I got error messages indicating "S.M.A.R.T. status bad, backup and replace. Press F1 to resume." for both SSDs. After hitting F1, pfSense started up normally.

Under 'Diagnostics>S.M.A.R.T. Status', I have run a long self test for both SSD, with no errors detected.

The output for 'All SMART and Non-SMART Information' for both disks is attached.

It says:
"SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED!
Drive failure expected in less than 24 hours. SAVE ALL DATA.
No failed Attributes found."

However, no errors are mentioned in the rest of the output.

The pfSense box (Supermicro 5018D-FN8T) is in use in our home since 2019 and so are the Supermicro SATA DOMs.

Should I replace the SSDs or is this a false alarm?

I would replace them. Or at least be ready to replace them. I don't believe you can clear that SMART failure so you'd have to disable the boot check to allow it to boot unattended.

Thanks a lot for your advice, much appreciated! Indeed, I'll order 2 new SATA DOMs and be ready to replace them. I have taken a backup of my system and downloaded the corresponding pfSense version.

In your experience, is it normal that the SSDs are EOL after about 4 years (it's a home router/firewall)?

There are a lot of variables there. I would expect a current SSD to last longer than that with a standard install. I'm not sure what the life writes of a DoM device might be. But running packages can increase writes significantly.

Minimum drive writes can be achieved by installing as UFS and enabling RAM disks. But some packages will not run with that. Especially on low RAM systems.
