Trying to get basic router functionality up and running
-
I had a run at this in the fall - using pfsense as a router with my ISP's router switched to AP mode. Went round and round, and was completely unsuccessful. Had some good input from this community, and for that I am grateful, even though it added up to a fail. I had to remove the netgate box to get any internet service.
Switched IP provider yesterday, and bought a new ASUS RT AX 55 router. Hooked it up to ISP modem, and setup wifi access etc. All good.
Then I tried to get the Netgate SG-1100 to act as my router, and switch the ASUS to AP mode.
Good news: something different from the complete blocking I had in the fall with ISP router. Bad news - still totally useless.
Now, the wifi icon on my macbook shows a scrolling bar running up and down the fan icon - indicating it is searching for something (connectivity?), yet when I click on the icon, it shows it connected to the wifi I set up before switching to AP mode.
Pfsense shows clients IPs, including the ASUS and my macbook, and I can access the ASUS via ip address. So PFsense IS acting like a router, yet IT HAS NO INTERNET ACCESS.
The whole point of buying this device and pfsense was to control (and encrypt) my routing/dns traffic.
I am overwhelmed by the thousands of items/check boxes/otions in the pfsense software - all of them in 'industry code' that is meaningless to me ("bogon networks" anyone?).
Is there a way to reset the netgate/pfsense box so that it acts as a router - that will supply my ASUS ip with interent access, when I plug the modem into the WAN port on the netgate box?
Is this an unreasonable ask? To get the thing to act like a router for my ASUS AP, and thus household clients - using default settings? I am happy to tinker after that - as long as I can reset back to defaults that include a working home network.
Help, please...

Ok, what does the Status > Interfaces page show?
What sort of connection does your ISP provide? Is it just DHCP?
You may need to reboot the modem if it's locked to the MAC address of the Asus router.
