NIC Issue between pfsense and an unmanaged switch
-
Hi everyone,
I dabble in networking as one of my hobbies and I am running into an odd issue with pfsense. I have an older pc running 2.7.2-RELEASE (amd64) with a 10Gb Dual LAN Base-T PCI-e Network Card, Intel X540. One port of the nic is setup as my WAN interface, and the second part runs to a unmanaged switch (8 Port 2.5G Unmanaged Ethernet Switch with 10G SFP, VIMIN).
The WAN port correctly detects the negotiated speed as 10Gbase-T <full-duplex>, however the LAN port going to the switch drops from 10Gbase-T <full-duplex,rxpause,txpause> to 100baseTX <full-duplex,rxpause,txpause>. I have tested the cable between the two and there don't seem to be any issue. Additionally, if I unplug and reconnect the switch the 10GB port of the switch pfsense will start to correctly detect the speed at 10Gbase-T for a while before it drops back down to 100baseTX
I have not purchased a different switch to try and determine if the issue is with the switch yet, and want to get some advice to try different solutions before going that route.

I'd first try swapping the NIC assignments to be sure the port on the NIC is good.
Then I would try setting it to 1G fixed link speed and see if it comes up as that. This 'feels' like a link negotiation problem.
That NIC might support N-baseT so you could try linking it to one of the 2.5G ports.
