Wifi Traffic dropping multiple times a day while on teams calls
-
Hi Everyone
I am new to the forum and have been using pfSense for a little while now (few years) but would still consider myself a beginner. Appreciate the any feedback and help with the following.
Hardware: Protectli FW4C
pfSense 2.7.2I have a pretty basic setup. I am running v2.7.2 on a Protectli FW4C device.
[WAN] ---> SurfBoard Cable Modem (service is with Spectrum)
[LAN] ---> directly plugged into Ubiquiti UAP-AC-PRO via POE adapter
[OPT1] ---> sometimes I connect my laptop directly via Ethernet other than that its not used
[OPT2] ---> hardwired directly to a Streaming DeviceFIREWALL RULES
I have isolated traffic on [LAN] , [OPT1], [OPT2] with firewall rules and I think they are working fine as I have ping tested within each interface to make sure they cannot communicate with one another.
LAN 10.10.10.1
OPT1 10.10.20.1
OPT2 10.10.30.1MY ISSUE
This is tricky for me because the internet works fine on the [LAN] interface most the time. I notice the issue when my wifi drops during video conferencing calls and then wifi reconnects after a few mins. This is happening fairly frequently. I do many calls a day (MS Teams mostly) and have been dealing with this for sometime. I had three drop calls today for example. I have tried using a different access point on [LAN] but it did not fix anything. I have tried using old linksys router that I was using prior to the pfSense setup and it does not drop calls. If I hardwire into the pfSense device on [OPT1] for example I do not have any dropped internet traffic during my video calls. The wifi could be dropping at other times during the day but I am not noticing it. Not sure what I am doing wrong so coming here for advise.HELP
I am not sure where to start looking to figure out what the problem is. Thought maybe someone on this forum could help point me in the right direction here. Again I am not a super user on pfSense but I do have some basic networking config and deployment experience in small office environments.Thank You!

The first thing I would do is check the pfSense system logs when you experience a drop. Does the LAN interface itself actually lose link? Anything else logged?
Check any logs you might have in the AP.
When you used the old router did that replace pfSense entirely or were you using it as an AP behind pfSense?

Okay let me check into the logs. I have never gone through the logs on pfSense so let me figure out how to do that.I am not sure if the LAN interface itself actually looses link. I don't believe so because when plugged into OPT1 I don't have the issue. I think it's just the wifi that drops but I'll have to test that out.
When I used the old router I replaced the pfSense entirely. I did not use the router just as a AP connected to the pfSense device or anything like that.
Let me see what I can find out and I'll report back.
Appreciate the response

Just look at that time in Status > System Logs > System > General to start with.
If there are issues with the NIC you will see link state changes logged. But anything logged at the point when it drops could be a clue.

@fenster Sounds more like an AP problem than something to do with pfsense... Have you checked out the Ubiquiti forums for help? Perhaps take a look in your Unifi Controller for any clues...
Could be lot's of different radio problems. Do you have more than one AP, does it happen on both bands? What about neighbours with wifi?
