Ideas how to diagnose this error??? I don't have enough to go on.

What pfSense version are you seeing that in?
That can be a number of things. One of them was this: https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/13408
That is now fixed though.Steve

@stephenw10 THANKS. Yep, on 2.6.* ... made me nervous about doing the upgrade... didn't want invalid rules causing trouble!
