      Hi,

I looking into getting a Netgate pfSense appliance and was wondering if any benchmark tests have been made with a Netgate 8200 with the fan detached and maybe lowered the max frequency to keep the temperatures at bay.

The reason is that I'll get 10G/10G fiber at home in a few weeks and the router will be placed in the living room and therefore should be dead silent.

I'm aware that 10G won't be possible with pfSense even with the fan (around 5G to 6G according to some forum posts) but was wondering how much faster then the 6100 it would be without a fan. I may consider installing Debian with VPP/DPDK or VyOS but that's another story.

On the other hand since disabling the fan will void the warranty I may just as easy replace the fan with one of the monster fan others have done here :) or a small silent Noctua.

Of course getting another slient device like a Supermicro E302 is an option but nevertheless I would be interesting to know if Netgate or others have looked into that usecase.

Hmm, no I'm not aware of any tests that have been done with the fan disabled. Not with the stock fansink at least. There was some initial testing with the 6100 heatsink that determined active cooling would be required.

        Steve
