Pfsense update failure only bios, 2.70 to 2.7.2 no loader menu
-
Hi all, I just tried to update from 2.7.0 to latest (2.7.2) and it failed. I get dropped straight to the Bios, I do not get to the Boot Environments in the Loader Menu.
My version was:
2.7.0-RELEASE (amd64)
built on Wed Jun 28 03:53:34 UTC 2023
FreeBSD 14.0-CURRENTI have a protectli fw4 a
Update: now it gives the no boot device warning.

I am pretty sure I ran into the zfs resize problem noted here in the release notes https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/releases/2-7-2.html
- I did not download my backup config to my computer before updating, this is dumb on my part.
- I do have a config from 2023 and I did not change much so I should be able to restore to that
- I made a new install drive per https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/write-memstick.html
- I also tried to recover my config but I could not locate it or the original disk or the zfs pool.
-
the system was not able to find or restore my previous config file on its own. So there went the info here https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/restore-during-install.html#recover-config-xml-from-existing-installation
-
The restore failed using the config I put on the drive in /conf , it found it but failed.
I was able to boot in the GUI of the fresh install and upload the config directly there. That worked.
Reminder to folks follow the upgrade guide here, don't get lazy https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/upgrade-guide.html

I have also learned that my entire Auto Configuration Backup file list is from Sat, 04 May 2024 19:14:00 -0400 to Sat, 04 May 2024 19:08:00 -0400 from my current restore.
I though restoring the config would also restore the device id.

@good4y0u it needs the password and device key:
