SOLVED: pfSense Installer - 24.03-beta-2 halts with error
-
I'm trying to use the online installation tool to update my spare SG-1100 to 24.03.
Everything goes well for quite a while, but then the installer errors out with:
pfSense-install kernel: pid 2500 (pkg-static), jid 0, uid 0, was killed: failed to reclaim memory
shown at the bottom of the PuTTY screen. The installer then notes that the installation has failed. I've run it several times with the same result.
I do notice that just before I select the console type (ansi, vt100, etc.) I see some errors about pfSense-install ZFS[some number]: failed to load zpool pfSense.
Also just to rule this out as a terminal emulator issue, I tried this on both Windows 10 and Ubuntu with the same result.

Are you able to collect a full log from that? The logs from the install should be in /tmp if you're able to get a shell after it fails.
What install options are you selecting?

I don't have a shell, when it restarts it just shows something like "Loading... T T T T T T" (a whole bunch of Ts, that wrap around the screen) IIRC.
I can run it again and capture the puTTY output and post it.
As far as options, just the defaults everywhere. It seems to get through the ZFS creation ok and then keeps loading all of the default packages until it bombs out with that memory error.

Hmm, OK. Yes a capture from putty should show it, thought the displayed text box is probably going to mangle it to some extent.
Do it report 'installation failure' or similar? If so it should give you an option to open a shell at that point.

@stephenw10 well, I tried again (to see if I could get a shell after it failed) and this time, it actually completed successfully.
So that's good news.
Now I'm just trying to get to the web configurator so I can restore a backup (made from the primary SG-1100) into this one. My plan was to get it online to my network via DHCP and then go into the web UI and restore it. However, I can't get into the web UI even though the console reports the address correctly (I set the wan to use DHCP) and it received an address from the main SG-1100, which I can see in that unit's web interface and it matches what the console confirms its address it. Assuming I can get into it, I can do the restore this way, and then disconnect the spare SG-1100 from the network before restarting it, correct? So as to not conflict with the active one?

Yup, that should work.
You can also import a config via the External Config Locator at boot:
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/backup/restore-during-install.html#restore-using-the-external-configuration-locator-eclIt still needs a connection to pull in any packages if you have them.

@stephenw10
Got it. Put the config file from the active one on a usb stick and inserted it, powered up the spare with the cable from the cable modem plugged in. Came up and set everything up perfectly.I really appreciate your help Stephen! Very glad that I now have 2 updated devices, one being a spare should an emergency arise. Thanks again.
