        Use hardware RAID.

I know….but depending on how you use Pfsense, software RAID is not very fast.

Writing on the disk, is about 1/3 of the speed in a hardware RAID without cache.

If the motherboard has RAID option, I would consider a couple of small SSD discs from http://www.innodisk.com/index.jsp

These are non-issues with most pfSense installs. The disk is not read much during normal operation. The only times that reads are a factor are at boot time.

Now if you're running a large squid cache then performance might matter, but for most, the benefit of having some cheap internal redundancy is better.

The plan is to have support for that in the installer for 2.0.

Just because it isn't "officially" supported now doesn't mean it won't be supported later. I run several boxes with gmirror at customer sites.

No, release dates aren't planned, it's ready when it's ready, and no sooner :)

After 1.2.3 is released, the plan is to focus efforts on bugs in 2.0 and make some headway, but there is a lot of work to be done.

I'm not familiar with NRPE, but if it's anything like the main install of Nagios, you should be able to write a custom shell script for it to call.

To check the mirror status, execute: /sbin/gmirror status

And then parse the output from that. Should be fairly simple, if you see COMPLETE, it's ok, if not, it's broken in some way. (you can get fancier than that if you want)
