I am getting an I/O error on boot of the SG-1100. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Reads suspiciously like the on board 8GB eMMC is toast. Not surprising since eMMC typically is made from low quality flash technology. There are a number of other threads of people complaining of similar problems.
I don't think it's user replaceable. Since there is no other internal storage capability, you will be reduced to using external USB flash storage. A USB flash/thumb drive is not much better. A SSD in an external USB enclosure would be a better option.
-
Yes it does. I would try reinstalling to confirm it at least.
The new Net Installer can install to a USB drive if so you can always get back up that way.
-
@elvisimprsntr @stephenw10 Thanks - certainly seems to be the case. Is a SSD mounted via USB feasible here to fill in for the toasted eMMC or are we talking specs for a replacement?
-
It should be possible. I just used a 16GB USB flash drive when I tested it.
