      Hello,

I am nervous about migrating from the Netgate 2100 to 4200 - due the many abilities of the pfSense software and extra packages that I am using.

I'm using DHCP, Traffic Shaping (buffer bloat), 10 VLANs, NAT, Port Forwarding, WAN Firewall Rules, (per-interface) VLAN Firewall Rules, ACME, Avahi, LLDP, NTP, Service Watchdog, Snort, and pgBlockerNG.

The good news is that I'm only using one WAN and one LAN port, and I have a managed switch that is all setup and working well.

I read in another post for a user that wasn't using VLANs - and who know what else was different about their setup - that all that was needed to do was backup the 2100 config, import to the 4200, and to (re)setup the interfaces.

What of my settings will I need to re-create on the 4200 after importing the 2100 backup? VLANs? Firewall rules, pgBlockerNG? Port forwarding, NAT, DHCP?

      Thank you.

@RKiFkRyCevGvpLeXMove Since you are using pfSense Plus on Netgate devices, there are some additional benefits.

One being that you can open a ticket with support on your 4200 box and ask them to convert your 2100 config to a 4200 compatible one (essentially just removing the “switch part”). They will provide you with at ready to import config that will have ALL of your config working right away without a need to re-create anything

Love the no fuss of using the official appliances :-)

Won't I still need to reinstall packages?

If I have to reinstall packages, will I have to recreate the settings?

@RKiFkRyCevGvpLeXMove During the config restore packages will be installed/reinstalled.

Package settings are normally in the config file. A few packages have a checkbox to delete settings during uninstall, to have the option to do so.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Package “presence” and settings are also stored in the config file, so when that it restored, it will reinstall all the packages present and restore their config

If you don't have any VLAN switch config on the 2100 you should be able to just import the config as is and reassign the two interfaces. By default the 2100 just uses WAN and LAN directly.

But if you open a ticket we can convert it so you don't even need to re-assign them.

@keyser I did open a ticket, and they did convert my config. I did need to reinstall packages, and reboot a couple of times, but all is now well.
