Internet going down
-
Hey guys been losing internet connectivity randomly. i did have a problem with my cable modem signal which my ISP came out to fix on the weekend. It did happen again this morning though. How would i go about determining if it is the cable modem or a PFsense issue? Any help would be much appreciated.

By using the equipment as it was ment to be used in the first place :
Hook up your modem to the ISP line.
Power it up.
Hook up a PC to the one and only LAN port on de modem.
Make the connection work.Test this for a while, and only if this setup works well, you can hook another device to your modem, like a router, like pfSense.

the only problem with that is it seems to only happen about once a week or so. So i would have to take the internet down for the whole house for a week at a time, I was hoping for an easier way.

Well, it's a way. Other might exist.
pfSense uses, as a WAN, an ordinary NIC, the same as your LAN, and other interfaces.
These stay 'up' as long as power is good. No reason an interface would be taken down.
That said, pfSense can take it down for a moment, as there is a process called dpinger that constantly pings a remote host, normally your upstream gateway,n or, as many people do : they chose '8.8.8.8'.
if the pings start to drop, pfSense detects a 'bad' connection, an can reset the WAN.
The moden, as it sees (feels ?) his LAN going down, can re initiate the upstream connection.
