Why is an internet connection required?

I'm trying to install pfSense and I already had to provide "my" personal information just to download it but now I can't install it because I don't have internet hooked up to it? Why does that even matter? I should be able to install it regardless. What if I wanted to run it inside of an isolated network, I guess I couldn't. The installation is not able to complete because it's not able to reach netgate servers. I'm wondering if this is about data collection because that would be concerning to say the least.

@SubSeven It downloads the correct install bits for the hardware. Which for CE is basically the same for all, but for Netgate hardware it differs for a few models such as ARM. And then they just have one installer.

It always pulls in the latest code so when we have package updates etc those are included.
You only need to have one recovery image. You can install multiple versions of Plus and CE from it. You usually won't need to get a new image when a new pfSense version is released, the offered versions are automatically updated.

@SteveITS I guess that makes sense, but I'm still suspicious in conjunction with the whole thing of asking for my name and address. I do like pfSense but since I was not able to install it I installed that other sense and I'm in the process of setting it up exactly the same way. If it works I'll stick with it and if not I'll install pfSense again and see what I can do to work around the inconveniences.

If you're installing CE you can just use the legacy installer images.

@stephenw10 Ok that would have probably worked too, I had considered getting one of my older downloads to take care of it. Either way, I'm not complaining or don't mean to. It's a free product first of all and second of all, if netgate owns it then they can do what they want with it and nobody is forcing me to download it. It's like if you own a house you should be able to paint it any color you want :) Personally I would paint it glow-in-the-dark haha.
