We've been trying to troubleshoot an issue where our Dual WAN configured Netgate 7100 will randomly stop routing traffic.
In the logs we've found an odd re-occurring error stating:

      Sep 13 11:01:17 xinetd 83436 Swapping defaults
      Sep 13 11:01:17 xinetd 83436 Starting reconfiguration
      Sep 13 11:01:17 check_reload_status 471 Reloading filter
Sep 13 11:01:16 kernel ix2: link state changed to UP
      Sep 13 11:01:16 check_reload_status 471 Linkup starting ix2
      Sep 13 11:01:16 check_reload_status 471 Reloading filter
Sep 13 11:01:15 kernel ix2: link state changed to DOWN
      Sep 13 11:01:15 check_reload_status 471 Linkup starting ix2

as far as I could see, ix2 is not an actual interface, it certainly isn't one that we've assigned for use.
We are using ix0 and lagg0 for all interfaces.

does this indicate an internal switch failing?

Hmm, yes, ix2 is almost always one of the two internal links to the switch. It should not ever lose link.

The only time that wouldn't be an internal link is if you have an expansion card fitted that also uses the ix driver.

One thing you could do is reconfigure it to use only ix3 instead of a lagg of ix2 and ix3. Assuming you are not also seeing ix3 lose link.
