Updating pfsense before using as firewall?

Hello,
I just got a used netgate 4100 appliance.
I want to update the appliance to the latest version of pfsense.
Can I just connect it to the local network and log in? Pfsense will be behind the firewall, but updating things should work fine.
Once logged in, how does one actually update pfsense from with in the appliance?
Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

@smokinjo As long as pfsense has internet access, you will be able to update it. And it will notify you if and when there is an update available. Check under System / Update which branch you are on.

Wile this is true, and should work just fine - I have never had an issue with it. It doesn't hurt to keep an eye out if newer version comes out.. I would suggest checking say every 6 months or so just to make sure your on latest..
Been around here long enough to see a few posts where users are way behind, and pfsense didn't say there was an update available.. So never hurts to manually check which version is current.. With an appliance you should be running + version, and there should be a new version here soon. Current is 24.03, while 24.08 is slightly delayed.. But I believe is suppose to come out this month.
Keeping in mind with pfsense, a version comes out when its ready.. They don't just release because of some date on the calendar, etc.

If it's currently unconfigured, then you could also make a TAC request to Netgate for the lastest software image and install it from usb.

@mvikman yup that should always be an option.. But I believe with the new net installer it will auto put + on it because it is a netgate appliance.

Yes, as long as there is no subnet conflict between the WAN and default LAN (192.168.1.1/24). If your existijg LAN is already using that you would need to set a different LAN subnet in pfSense first.
