Like as shown in the gateway widget?
The actual gateway status is governed by the monitoring parameters which can be set in the advanced gateway settings.

If you edit the gateway in System > Routing > Gateways and go to the advanced settings you can set the parameters used to monitor the gateway:

Thus you can make it detect packet loss or latency faster if you need to. The default values there are usually good though.
