I too ran across the freenas problem and had a *nix guru take a look. He said that the compiled version of PHP that you are using to run the services did not get the gettext module compiled in. If it were there that would solve the whole FreeNAS issue.

FreeNAS only works with our development version.

It's clearly stated in the package notes.
