Recommended L2/L3 Switch for Simulators with pfSense

I'm exploring networking with pfSense and recently purchased a Catalyst 1200 switch, only to discover it doesn't run the expected classic IOS or IOS XE. I'm curious about others experiences integrating pfSense with network simulators like EVE-NG, CML, or GNS3. Has anyone used these simulators to test while having the Catalyst 1200 switches in their setup?
What Layer 2/Layer 3 switches would you recommend for use in these simulators? Ideally, I'd like a switch that can be mirrored in real life just as it is in the simulator.
Is it true that the Catalyst 1000 Series runs the classic Cisco IOS? Would switching to those switches allow me to use GNS3 for testing a nearly exact configuration?
