Netgate 4200 RJ45 to USB-A cable doesn't work
-
A few weeks ago I purchased a Netgate 4200.
Do those ship with a RJ45 to USB-A console cable? I now have one and I can't imagine where else it would have come from.
It had a nib one one side of the RJ45 connector that prevented it from going into a jack. I carved this off...
If so, how do I get it to work? When I plug it into the 4200 console port and then my laptop running Debian 12 (bookworm) I get the following from dmesg | tail:
[535564.680782] usb 1-3: new low-speed USB device number 43 using xhci_hcd [535564.808896] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [535565.044938] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [535565.280799] usb 1-3: new low-speed USB device number 44 using xhci_hcd [535565.408896] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [535565.645014] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [535565.753045] usb usb1-port3: attempt power cycle [535566.164738] usb 1-3: new low-speed USB device number 45 using xhci_hcd [535566.165362] usb 1-3: Device not responding to setup address. Any thoughts?

I don't believe they come with it, but it's been a while. If you have any doubt or need help accessing the console, contact TAC.

@marcosm The 4200 is working fine for me with its web interface. I want to use this cable on a different device. If I can get it to work it would be helpful. If not, I'll order either another one from Amazon, or a COM to USB-A cable to work with the RJ45 to COM cable that came from the manufacturer of the device I'm trying to connect to.

@gld The 4200's store page says "console port: Cisco pinout RJ45 + micro-USB (micro-USB cable included with each system)" which matches my recollection of what I got. I don't remember what's on the other end of the included cable --- likely USB-A but I'm not sure. In any case, that cable you have is not what came with the 4200.

@gld said in Netgate 4200 RJ45 to USB-A cable doesn't work:
The 4200 is working fine for me with its web interface
Using any of the 'LAN' network interfaces.
Remember : a 4200 is headless : no screen, no keyboard.
If something happens, and the system doesn't boot up 100 %, NICs aren't activated.
See the GUI as a perfect plan B to administer your device.
Plan A is the console port.
This implies that you will need this USB cable that came with your 4200. Without it, you're locked out.True, there are people out there that never needed it

FWIW, I've had good luck with this console cable connecting to a variety of devices with Cisco-style console ports from both Windows and Debian machines. Haven't tested with a 4200 however.
-
Yeah it's supplied with a USB-A to USB-B-micro console cable. That's just standard cable though, you could get one anywhere.
If you're using a USB/serial adapter cable that's entirely down to the cable and/or driver in use. The 4200 has no influence on that.
-
@stephenw10 Thanks for confirming that is a standard USB A to B-micro cable. I thought so. What I remember is that the 4200 only came with that cable. But my memory is not always reliable, so I thought I'd ask.

@marcg I've got that one in my cart. Waiting for the total to reach free shipping.
