    PFSense Forum Attached Instructions.txt

Hello. I am a teenager doing some sys-admin work for my parents. I am rather new to networking. I am working with a Netgate SG-1100 running PFSense 23.09.

Recently, I tried to set up a VPN on it and it did not work. I want to use ProtonVPN because I can get it for free and I have had success with it on individual computers, but I need it on the Netgate in order to protect my home server. When I researched installing ProtonVPN on PFSense, the ProtonVPN documentation said to install and use with Wireguard.

When I set up Wireguard and ProtonVPN (following the instructions in the .txt file above), my desktop (connected via ethernet) had internet roughly the same as before the VPN, but my dad’s work computer (company software and VPN, also connected via ethernet) had extremely slow internet speeds (5 Mb/s download speed versus 200 Mb/s originally) or could not get any connection at all. When I tried to create a rule to allow my dad’s computer to bypass the VPN, it got download speeds that were actually a couple megabits slower then when it went through the VPN. When I removed the VPN and completely uninstalled Wireguard, internet speeds went back to normal.

Should I change anything from the instructions in the pdf? I do not remember exactly how I set up the rule that failed. Can someone please walk me through how to handle my dad’s company computer? If I can’t, what are my other options?

Thank you all so much for your time.
