I took another look - and I have an available X16 slot - PCIe 2 - so that opens things up a bit as far as selection.

So - I added an Intel Pro 1000 - 4 port 1G NIC - and all is well.
Realtek disabled in the bios.
Life is good.
Lesson learned.
All functions normal...
