PPPoE WAN not establishing over vodafone
-
Hello peoples
I got my hands on a Protecli Vault V1210 unit but I'm struggling to get an IP from my ISP, Vodafone through the WAN interface over PPPoE with a VLAN. I followed https://greenfrognest.com/pfVodafoneSiro.php and https://tcpip.wtf/en/pfsense-pppoe-tagged-vlan-wan.htm. The DSL cable from my Vodafone router is now wired directly into the WAN port of the Vault.
I have plugged my PPPoE User ID and password into the WAN interface. Then I assigned my VLAN to the PPPoE WAN but the line is still failing to come up. To summarise, I followed every step in the guide from tcpip.wtf
I have double checked my PPPoE logins with Vodafone support and they gave me a different VLAN, 101 over 911 from before. This did not work either, I have tried adjusting the MTU size to 1492 and 1498. I see some people had success with VLAN 10 but that did not work for me either.
pfsense and networking is all new to me, hoping some UK people can shed some light on how to work Vodafone.

What do you see in the system logs? Is it getting any response from the server side at all?

The Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) isn't a Ethernet cable !
The DSL line has to be connected to a modem type device (normally not a router), and this modem has an Ethernet cable as a single LAN, that you hook up to the WAN port of pfSense. -
Ah, good point! Yes you still need a modem in there. So either the supplied router in bridge mode (if it has one) or some alternative device like an Openreach modem or Draytek etc.

@Gertjan @stephenw10 Thanks guys. I have picked up a Draytek modem to connect DSL, then ethernet to the protectli WAN.
I managed to get Vodafone to assign an IP over the WAN port yesterday, whilst half asleep. I reset the Protectli today, with the intention of setting it up fresh and now I can't get an IP over the WAN.
I followed both those guides from Greenfrognest and TCIpwtf but Vodafone just won't assign an IP over the WAN port and I can see from the logs that the WAN line is not coming up, it keeps saying reconnecting.

Does the modem show the line is synced and up?
Where are you applying the VLAN? You can probably set that in the modem.
