Need Help - BrightSpeed ONT to pfSense Box / IPoE
-
Is there a set of instructions that will help me connect my netgate box directly to BrightSpeeds ONT. They use IPoE. When I connect up the ISP is not passing me an IP address via DHCP. I received this information from BrightSpeed Support --- "Yes, that's exactly it. After that you will contact the SG-3100 modem manufacturer or technical support to configure the modem." /// "It can connect after you contact the SG manufacturer to configure it Basically they will transfer the credentials from BS to SG." ---

Have you followed their instructions to set up PPPoE credentials and VLAN tag?

@elvisimprsntr They are telling me that they use IPoE. And that once I connected the ONT to the SG-3100 that the gateway manufacturer has to be contacted in order to configure things. These are the IPSs instructions -
Them - Yes, you must connect the ONT cord to the WAN/LAN port and just to give you a heads up that once you plug the cord the BS modem will no longer work. After that you will contact the Netgate to configure the modem.
Me -Just to make sure... I have the the ethernet output on the ONT. I have jumped between that point and my SG-3100. The BS Modem, looks kind of like an air cleaner is turned off
Them - Yes, that's exactly it. After that you will contact the SG-3100 modem manufacturer or technical support to configure the modem.
Them - It can connect after you contact the SG manufacturer to configure it Basically they will transfer the credentials from BS to SG.

IPoE feature request still not implemented.

Unless someone has a workaround, you may have to place the ISP gateway in transparent bridge mode and place pfSense behind it.

@elvisimprsntr Thanks for the update... The router provided by BS is pretty poor. They came to my house and could not get to work in the transparent bridge mode. It just locks up and you have to factory reboot it, but then you only get the private IP range. Also, they are not set up in my area to provide for a static IP address as well. Looks like it is StarLink for me.

Your isp wants you to add a VLAN tag to the wan. This thread may help you and get you started. I am guessing you will need to get the tag number from your isp.
Found doing s search of the forum: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/178052/my-new-isp-use-ipoe-new-zealand

Some of the reddit posts I read indicated once you put the ISP gateway in bridge mode, you can no longer access the configuration page and have to factory reset.
Might help if you listed what model GW your ISP provided.

@elvisimprsntr It is a Model C4000XG. CenturyLink. I had conversation with the local operations manager. His tech came to my house. We could not get it into bridge mode without it locking up. Once you put it in bridge mode it does lock up and the only way you can get it back is to factory reboot it. At that point you get 192.168.0.X which I cannot work with. I even tried doing all that with tech support... same result.

@Uglybrian Thanks I might give that a try. I have been at this for about 6 months off and on. Starting get wore down messing with BrightSpeed. Looking at StarLink. I do not think BrightSpeed is ready for prime time at least around here. Does not provide static IPs, their router locks up when you try to put it in pass through, cannot connect to the ONT directly... When they say they will call you back... that does not happen. I started this journey in July last year... Time to move on.

@Uglybrian I gave it a try and it worked. Create a VLAN 201 and attach it to the WAN interface. Pretty straight forward. I followed your links. I have been at this for about six months off and on and was ready to throw in the towel. When I saw the 3100 go online I thought I was seeing things at first! Anyway thank you very much for your post. And, I hope this post helps others!
