How to best make update to pfSense effective?
-
I got this notification email this morning:
09:00:08 Some packages are part of the base system and will not show up in Package Manager. If any such updates are listed below, run
pkg upgrade
from the shell to install them:pfSense-upgrade: 1.2.30 -> 1.2.31 [pfSense]
Is this the main pfSense software? Is there a way to restart that package without having to reboot the gateway?

I had the same notification from my pfSense, but wasn't that last week or so ?
This pfSense package is just a bunch of files that handle the pfSense upgrade.
So, the upgrader is upgrading itself.Use the console option 13.
Or, as said, go option 8, and use the good oldpkg upgrade
No need to restart or reboot.

You're only seeing that because you're running the custom package notification script. Most users don't see that and don't need to. The pfSense-upgrade package updates itself when it's run at upgrade.
But you can update that anytime without issues. It's only used at upgrade.
