Is there a generic serial port terminal program included in pfsense?
If no serial terminal program, can you add one? I ask because several different (I have two) modern 3G modems define extra serial ports for diagnostic purposes. They allow you to query the signal strength, and the connectivity status, etc.
What do you think? If you can add a program, I'll take a shot at making it useful.
See this link for reference for Sierra Wireless modems. At the bottom of the page you'll see the "AT command port" definitions and signal strength query.
It should be fairly easy to use "tip" as it is included in the FreeBSD base system.
It's only a 50k binary and has no dependencies. It reads /etc/remote (which is already on a pfSense box) to map names like com1 to serial ports.
I just copied the binary over from another FreeBSD box of mine and it seemed to run OK.
EDIT: I did that test on a 7.x box and 1.2.3, but I imagine that 2.0/8 isn't much different.
Can you post/attache the binary from 8.0 or go ahead and include it in the 2.0 image? I'm on a 3G modem and can't realistically go downloading the FreeBSD 8.0 base CD to get a 50K binary package.
Do you have any other suggestions?
I don't have an 8.0 box with a full install handy anywhere at the moment or I would. I have the CDs downloaded but they're on a desktop machine at work which I can't get to until tomorrow.
The decision to include another binary in the distribution is, as they say, above my pay grade ;D
Whenever you have a chance to post it I would appreciate it.
How should I go about requesting the consideration of the high pay grade people? ;)
