After configuring my pfsense the way I like it, I make a backup (just in case) and configure a new Boot Environment.

If I attempt to reboot in to that environment I get the following error on the console and the router won't boot. If I remove power and add power again it will boot in to the correct boot environment, but some of the settings will have reverted. Which settings? depends!

I have no idea how to debug this. What does it even mean that it can't find the image information? why does it startup after a powerdown and why are some settings reverted?

Hmm, that's a panic. It only happens after making a new BE? Rebooting before that works normally?

What hardware is it? Which pfSense version?

@stephenw10 Rebooting has been unreliable since I got the device. I have found Halt to be reliable, but reboot to be a gamble.

Hmm, well that's not right. Have you opened a support ticket for this? If not you should do so: https://www.netgate.com/tac-support-request

Have you ever done a clean re-install?

@stephenw10 I decided since I was going to do a completely clean install that I'd follow the instructions to install an nmve ssd. Much success - everything works including reboot.

But there was a mystery - tehere's a step to erase the metdata on your emmc drive. But when I got in to the recovery mode there were no drives at all.

I suspect I had a bum emmc drive and it finally gave up when I went to do the reinstall. Good/lucky timing I guess.
