      Hello,

I am trying to install via bootable USB, version 2.7.2 of pfsense.

I'm installing this on a protectli vault model number: fw108120. I purchased it used and It is currently running version 2.3.5 of pfsense.

I inserted the USB, navigated to boot menu and booted from USB. After that there is an on screen menu with 5 options which last 10 seconds. Then, a blank screen with a small white square in the upper left hand corner. Nothing happens after this.

I selected ok menu? And entered several commands I found on this forum like load /blah/blah/boot etc. None of them worked.

I am not the most tech savvy and really need help with this. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

@26289 did you follow Protectli's guide How to Install pfSense CE on the Vault.

After you followed the guide, a foto or video of what you mentioned above is helpful, if the issue still persists.

Sounds like you used the wrong memstick image so got the wrong console type. If you've using a serial console use the memstick-serial image. Otherwise don't. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@patient0 I can't figure out how to post pictures...yes I'm following instructions as closely as possible but not getting pass booting from USB.

Booting from USB gets me nothing.

Should I remove the version of pfsense that's on the SSD? Would that help anything? How do I do that?

@26289 what app do you use to write the image to USB. If it's balenaEtcher, then see below notice in that guide:

**Note for balenaEtcher users: Use the .iso image opposed to the .img image to properly burn the image to your USB.

And for image posting, probably not enough reputation point (not sure if you need 5, gave you one). Upload to a pictures side and post a link to it.

What BIOS do you have on that device? coreboot or AMI?

And you are using the VGA console I assume?

Otherwise, yes, try using Etcher. But I would still use the memstick image. The ISO is not a hybrid image.

Swapping the .img for a .iso did the trick. Everything is now in working order. Thank you for your help!

Hmm, well that's interesting. I wouldn't have expected that to work at all. ๐Ÿค”

Me neither but maybe to do with a quirk of coreboot, if that device is flashed with it.
