i have a sg-2100 i got a couple years ago. never used it and still has 22.05. recently, i configured it with some simple rules and a couple of VPNs and want to start using it.

would it be recommended to connect it to the internet and update it that way or while it is offline use the Netgate Installer, netgate-installer-aarch64.img.gz, i downloaded yesterday?

with either way, will a restore be necessary as the docs mentions with the netgate installer? i have a backup so not too big a deal either way i guess.

Either should work. If you install new that erases the drive so yes you'd need to restore from your backup .xml file. I would just upgrade it though. It will probably take at least two steps as I don't think you can jump all the way to current. If you have any trouble you already have the installer and a backup which would likely be the way to recover.

Also the Installer requires (you set up WAN) an Internet connection to download the actual files, so...

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.
