I upgraded my pfsense 2.7.2 on Protectli box. Update went well, Traffic is flowing, packages removed, unit rebooted. I can login but after 15 minutes, it logs me out and trying to login again says the unit is not found and not replying. It answers to ping, and network traffic is still being passed. I just can't login to it like before. (too long to respond, or no response).
Is this going to be a nuke and rebuild situation?

@NetworkNerd Can't log in via the web GUI, SSH, console, or any?

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@SteveITS correct. GUI is totally not available to login. If I reboot the box, I can login if I get back to my desk quickly. But, after logging in for 15 - 30 minutes the screens clears and there is no screen presented when going to the IP address that I log in on. Error says too long to respond, and site not available, depending on the browser. (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Vivaldi, Brave). SSH is not setup and not sure where the console port is on the Protectli.

@NetworkNerd Did you try SSH or console login? If you can log in there I would bet if you restart the webconfigurator and/or PHP the GUI will come back. Then your question will be, why is that (whichever it is) process crashing...that will be in the logs somewhere.

@SteveITS When my wife is done with her job, I will power cycle the unit, and login. First item to configure SSH, then look at logs, downlod them and go through them. Thank you. I'll post what I find, perhaps tonight or tomorrow.

@SteveITS If I reboot the device, I can login with GUI and SSH. After it goes silent, SSH nor GUI respond.
I was looking for the "download logs" somewhere. I am sure there is an option to download them. I hate to setup a syslog server just to capture this box. I'll reboot again maybe tomorrow and look again.

You should be able to see enough logs in the gui to see what was happening at that time. Unless something is continually spamming the logs. A lot!

If ssh also stops responding that's probably not a php issue. Have you tried connecting to the local console? If that stops responding it's something very low level and I'd be surprised it kept routing.
So it probably will and in that case you can use that to check connectivity, logs etc.

@stephenw10 Yes, it continues to route traffic but SSH stops responding and GUI login stops responding.
Rebuilding it from scratch will be a problem since the 2.8CE needs an internet connection to load/build. I think I still have the router/modem from the ISP I can connect and use, unless they have blocked it since it has been offline for 3 years. I can see 200 entries in the logs but not sure how to download the entire log. Of course the 200 entries don't have where it quit. :-(

@NetworkNerd In the Netgate Installer you configure WAN so it provides its own Internet connection.

In the GUI you can set how many log lines to display. Or in shell look in /var/log.

@NetworkNerd Just in case you haven't tried this yet. The new Netgate online installer does provide you the option to set up the WAN interface connection details such as PPPoE etc as part of the process. I'm not a fan of the choice to remove offline installers by any means but at least they do provide this functionality.
