Upgrade from 2.7.2 to 2.80 failed, unable to boot
-
This is just to give some feedback about my update tot pfSense 2.8.0.
I tried to upgrade pfSense from 2.7.2 to 2.80 but during upgrade it failed. It gave some error with the words EFI, boot , drive and space... but I entered trough it and forgot to make a picture (could not find this error afterward) after this there was an "error code 1" returend en the upgrade process stopped. The errorcode 1 was not very indicative either.
Pfsense was sitll working at this moment (2.7.2) but after a reboot (I thought maybe that would fix things...) , I could not log in (even not via SSH) anymore. Afer connecting a monitor and keyboard to the Pfsensebox (its runing on baremetal) I found out it booted right in to the BIOS screen... the harddrive (200G M.2 ssd) was somehow not recognized as bootable disk anymore.
I decided to perform a clean install: downloaded the iso for version 2.8.0 from pfsense.org and made a bootable USB-key, and was able to recover my configuration from a backup XML during the installationprocess. So after some stress 2.8.0 is now happy running again.
Never had issues like these before. During installation the now obligatory internet-connection is strange and might give complications. My internetprover works with a VLAN, fortunately I remembered the VLAN# ..... I was actualy amazed that this worked.
Hope the might help others with similar problems during upgrade.

Hi, I'm not aware that a ISO for 2.8.0 is downloadable - where have you found it? Or do you mean the new "installer"?

You are right it is an image file of the installer... (I usually call this an ISO which is perhaps not right)
Just donwloaded it at https://www.pfsense.org/download/ after obligatory making an account... -
