RC3: webGUI slow IMO, moving configs
-
1. I've been using RC2 and now RC3 and some snapshots intween on a few i815 400-500Mhz white boxes. cdrom, 128MB CF, HD.
RC3 feels alot slower. When I change something in General (like the Time Zone), it takes 25sec to get done.
Overall not snappy, like a RC2 box still going.2. I'm having a ? on setting up a backup firewall box while I'm away for a vacation.
I have 2 RC2's running on HDs.
I have a backup machine that I want to run on CDROM with a floppy according to which location dies.I have backedup the XMLs, restored the XML to the cdrom box. It promptly wants to restart, but I can't tell that the config gets written to floppy.
I see that rc3 adds the "98) Move config to remov…."
Do I need to upgrade in order to get this to work? (and do it onsite)
OR manually copy the XML to floppy?Richard

Let me guess, you only have 64 megs of ram?
RC3 is MUCH faster on recommended hardware.

That was part of it, just clicking between screens improved with 128 from 64.
but that "didn't make RC3 much faster" for me. although I had to ship off the box I was testing.
It was strange that the new page would show, but the status bar at the bottom was still moving, and the page was unresponsive in firefox until deemed 'done'.
Anyway, maybe I'll find something particular with that box. It was installed on a 128CF (not embedded-from CD), no page file. 6 users max. IPSEC.on the floppy front. I had to explicity do the 98) and fd0 on a clean floppy when boot from CD. maybe that's by design?
also, pfsense doesn't like the floppy controllers on intel branded i810CA boards. I got a panic when doing the 98)

64 is not supported. 128 is the minimum.
Run m0n0wall if you have 64 meg machines.

I bet you are using IE 5.x or something. It is freaking slow on this. IE6+ and Firefox work MUCH better. Don't use ancient Software. pfSense's webgui uses ajax and javascript. Make sure your browser supports these techniques fine.
Concerning the floppydisk:
Copy the config of box1 to a floppy to /conf/config.xml and the config of the box to another floppy as /conf/config.xml. Then you can boot up the machine either with config of box1 or box2 depending which disk is in the drive on bootup from cdrom.Option 98 btw only appears of there were empty medias detected on bootup that could store the config AND if no config.xml was found on any of the available medias.

OK Different box, same hardware basically and on a HD, Firefox, and runs just fine. Very snappy!
Changing Time Zone took 4 seconds, not 25.
Whew, that's a relief!and yeah, I could have using IE60SP0 yesterday, it's got that 'slow finish' . reproducing it now, but my benchmark, Time zone still doesn't take forever like it was.
I'll re-check that box Fri or Mon when it's plugged in on location. On the floppy, seems like I noticed 98) even with a config'd floppy, and I thought it strange. But it might have been on a interface mismatch, but before reboot…
Yes, manually copying the file over is what I ended up doing. Thanks for the comments.
