I've Just Taken Over …

… a VMware pfSense fw installation that was left behind with no documentation (and I'm a newbie to pfSense although I've worked with other firewalls). I need to get in and add an IP address to the access list. Is the web interface access via the private IP address assigned to the fw? Is there a default port? I can get to the pfSense console setup screen via a VMware session; but I don't see how to go to the actual interface to set rules, etc. from there.

Depending on how the previous person left it, you should be able to reach the GUI from the LAN side, either via http or https (try both)
If you can get to the console, you can always choose the option to reset the LAN IP, and then enter the exact same IP info that is already has, which has the side effect of resetting the WebGUI such that you can get in if access has been restricted. You can also reset the GUI password from the console if needed.
There are lots of docs on the wiki (see the link in my sig) which should prove useful, including one on what to do if you're locked out of the WebGUI.

Thanks for the insight! I finally figured out the Webconfigurator had to be restarted (and the password changed). After that, it was simple. (Sorry, I'm not used to having to restart something to get into a firewall!)

Well usually you dont have to reset the webGUI.
Normally you know how access to the GUI is allowed and just access it.In most setups i have i allow access to the webGUI only via VPN (even if you are on the LAN side).
