In http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/updates/ if I right click on the link pfSense-Full-Update-2.0-BETA1-20100222-1626.tgz.md5 and select Save as the browser offers to save the file as pfSense-Full-Update-2.0-BETA1-20100222-1626.tgz.gz rather than the file name in the link. Because the file name is so long its easy to overlook the wrong file type (gz rather than md5) and then be puzzled why the originally selected md5 file apparently didn't download.

What browser are you using? That doesn't happen to me with Firefox.

Opera 10.10 for Linux. I'll report it to Opera.

Opera mishandles the downloading of .gz files for me on FreeBSD, too. It decompresses them but doesn't rename them.

So you end up with blah.iso.gz which has already been decompressed, so it is no longer gz format, but still named blah.iso.gz.

I've learned to just copy the URL and use fetch from the console to download such things :-)

Thanks for the warning about downloading .gz files with Opera.
