**SOLVED**Astaro ASG 320
-
This system has 8 interfaces, 4 gigabit and 4 10/100. It has a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz processor and a gig of ram. It also has a serial interface and LCD on the front, all in a nice 1U box. Has anyone managed to install Pfsense on one, or have any idea if it would work? It has a regular hard drive in it as well. Bring on the ideas, I don't want to pay for Astaro, but the hardware is pretty bad ass!

I wonder who their OEM is? I've been on the search for OEM Network Appliance vendors and have run across a few. I'm currently in contact with them to see if they will sell one or two of their appliances and not make me have to order a boatload of them.
The OEM Network Appliance vendors I've come across are:
Lanner - http://www.lannerinc.com/Network_Application_Platforms
AR Infotek - http://www.arinfotek.com/product.php
WIN Enterprises - http://www.win-ent.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=39&Itemid=60
Portwell - http://www.portwell.com/products/ca.asp
I'm sure it would be cheaper to contact the OEM and get a quote for the equipment rather than purchasing some other company's name on the same item.
Has anyone else had experience with these products from any of the above listed companies?

I picked up the Astaro ASG 320 off of ebay for $800 and the ASG 220 for $500. It is pretty steep, but really not too bad when you look at the port density you get and the nice 1U box. I just want to install Pfsense on them if it will work, it is much lighter than Astaro and has very similar functionality as far as IPS, firewall and content filtering.

What happens when you try to boot the LiveCD?

The appliance does not have a CD/CVD-ROM, it has a serial connection and that is it. I am going to give it a shot with the embedded image and see if I can load it on the hard drive and put it back in the appliance. I believe I should be able to access the serial interface if I don that.

Solved!
The ASG 320 works like a charm with Pfsense! I had been running Pfsense on an old Compaq/HP D51S (Pizza box PC) with 4 NICs, 2 gigs of ram, a 40 gig hard drive, Pentium4 2.4ghz. I logged into it, enabled the serial port and powered it down. I then pulled the hard drive, pulled the 80 gig from the ASG 320 and replaced it with the one from my old system. I booted it up and got console right off the bat. It recognized all 4 Gig interfaces, as well as all 4 10/100 interfaces. I had to reconfigure the LAN and WAN interfaces, but that was nothing. It did require a reboot in order to start passing traffic, but I suspect that was just because the MAC address had changed on my Internet side. Once I rebooted, it works like a charm. I purchased an ASG 220 from ebay on Wednesday, I can't wait for it to get in and give it a whirl as well. If anyone would like screen shots or anything, I can post some. -
A little bit more to add… I got the LCD working as well using the LcdProc package, the driver needed is the nexcom using the parallel port (lpt1) 2 rows, 16 columns.

1. Download the LiveCD from the website
2. Take the hard drive from the Astaro and install it into some other desktop that you have and have it as the primary master.
3. Boot the LiveCD and select install
4. When asked which kernel to use select the embedded kernel
5. Finish install, and put hard drive back in the Astaro and boot it.
6. Be watching the boot process through the com port and make sure everything goes fine
7. Setup interfaces
8. Enjoy -
i already installed the pfsense in asg 425 by installing ribbon cable w/ vga connector into the main board of the astaro. Thank you very much!
