First time installation cant' get it to work

  • Hello everybodey. I am trying to install pfsense 1.0 RC3 on a PC, but fail miserably.

It starts with the argument Lan SIS0 interface mismatch when booting on 2 different pc's. Then when i try to assign a LAN ip (option 2) i get ifconfig: sis0 interface does not exist?

Then it says that my IP address has been set, but i can't connect to the pfsense box, wheteher i set DHCP or not, i just cant access it???

When i want to assign an interface (option 1) pfsense lists ed0, xl10, ed1. But when it asks to enter the LAN interface name ( i type ed0, xl10 OR ed1) it says invalid interface name '      ' on all interfaces.

Maybe its time for a little howto on installing pfsense on a PC with common problems. I used to use clarkconnect which i got up and running in a breeze, but this is a little harder to do :)

Thank you all for your help

    Greetings lampie

  • Well that costs me 3 hours of my life. Maybe time for new glasses or a small improvement to pfsense.

On my 15" monitor it is VERY hard to read but i read x10. I typed x10…. I made a typo..... It should be xl10 Maybe it is handy to change to capitals so it says XL0 instead of xl10.  :) The l and the number 1 are hard to distinguise...

  • pfSense has an autoconfigure option. When assigning the interfaces it says something like press a to autoconfigure. Then it will ask you to plug the cable into the lan, wan, etc spot and hit enter again. Do this for all the cables.

Can't really change the screen resolution as its just standard text output. You can grab a 17" flat panel for just over 100 bucks now.

However I think you will find that once its configured initally its easy to use. Plus you can backup and restore your configuration so you shouldn't have to do that again.

i have a 14" monitor i can see the fonts just fine, maybe you really need to wear new glasses  ;D x10 should be xl0, i encountered that sis0 mismatch error too during install which i did not encounter when i was still using rc2

  • Thanks for the help, i have it running now and am pleasantly amazed by pfsense. Amazing product you guys have made so far. I think i am shoving my clarkconnect box out of its way as a router and set it back a step and use it only for web, ftp and mail :)

Big ups btw for the wireless support (i use a ralink chipset, sweex card) :o.  This is really a pain in the ^$^ for setting up with linux.

Think im hooked to pfsense  :-*

  • Can I just say that this thread has single handedly fixed my setup problems with pfsense. lol, I was typing in x10 over and over, and I couldn't understand why it wouldn't work… xl0... doh!!!
